Year 7 History
Castle Research Project
This term, Mrs Ridgard’s
students studied religion
and murder in the Middle
Ages. They were tasked with
researching a medieval castle
of their choice then present
their research in a
creative way.
Some great work was
produced, including a castle
made of cake and waffles.
Geography
Geography students in Mrs Ridgard’s class did some extensive
research on Africa, producing maps and fact files about their
chosen African country.
Population Pyramids
The students had a learning objective to:
• Describe the features of different population pyramids.
• Explain the features of different populations, using
population pyramids.
• Create population pyramids using data.
Colour coded blocks were used to create their pyramids,
which helped the students to understand the changes to the
global population over time and what factors have caused
these changes.
Practical Learning
Buddhism
Mrs Ridgard’s nurture groups have been doing some fabulous
practical learning. This year, in philosophy and ethics, they
have been learning about Buddhism and have designed and
made their own Zen Meditation Gardens to learn about the
benefits of meditation and different meditation practices. They
also designed some mandalas - a circular diagram, generally
made of coloured sand - used to encourage mediation and
contemplation.
Bodhi trees have been planted for students to take home and
nurture. This is where the Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama gained
enlightenment after his long journey. Below are pictures of
the Bodhi celebrations on December 8th, the day the Buddha
achieved enlightenment. Media such as clay, chalk and even a
heart shaped cookie (the shape of the Bodhi Tree leaves)
was used.
By the end of term, students
were able to explain,
Buddhist events, rituals
and practices such as
enlightenment and how
Buddhists achieved this.
Students were able to explain
what mediation is and the
importance of it. They even
had a chance to take part in
their own meditation which
was enjoyed by all,
in particular Mr Addy.
