Students Win Tomorrow’s
Engineers EEP Robotics
Space Challenge
Northampton Academy is delighted to be the winning team
for the Space Project Presentation, in the Midlands heat of
Tomorrow’s Engineers EEP Robotics Space Challenge 2017.
The event was staged at the AMTC Coventry and the group
of Year 8 students beat off tough competition from 16 other
schools, presenting a thorough and well-detailed project on
how humans can survive and colonize in space.
It was an eventful day, which saw students participate in
four main challenges that consisted of programming a Lego
Mind-storms EV3 robot to complete a series of challenges,
to presenting a space research project in front of industry
experts. A lot of positives were taken from the competition in
terms of working as a team and an insight into possible career
paths, although the team didn’t quite manage to secure a
place in the grand finale, falling just outside the top two.
Computer Science teacher
Ricky Prince commented:
“Students were really
engaged and the feedback
from them was that they
have learned a lot in terms
of problem-solving skills,
teamwork and working
under pressure. This was the
first time the Academy has
competed in this competition
and thanks to the team’s
hard work, they were able
to bring home a 1st place
trophy for their Space Project
Presentation. When they
accepted the award you
could see how proud they
were to achieve an accolade
for all their hard work.”

Hunstanton Trip
The students had a fantastic time on their day trip to
Hunstanton earlier in the year. Their day included a walk along
the beach, collecting shells and examining the cliffs, followed
by a visit to the Sea Life Centre. Here they enjoyed a tour of
the centre, including a visit to the on-site Seal Sanctuary, and
learnt all about sharks and other species of sea life.
The trip was a great learning experience, bringing coastal
features alive.
Grendon Trip
Year 7 Nurture students experienced a fantastic adventure trip to Grendon, this was a fabulous adventure for them. The activities
included, finding their way through the dark tunnels, crossing the murky swamp, flying the zip-wire and bread-making on the
camp fire.
