Author Bali Rai Library Visit
Northampton Academy welcomed Bali Rai to the Library,
a well-known author of modern, cutting-edge books for
teenagers and children. Bali’s popular stories are about
everyday people and the scenarios they face within the modern
multicultural society of today.
World Book Day
We had some interesting characters wandering round the
Academy on World Book Day. Staff dressed up as their
favourite literary characters for the day, giving out free books
to students during lunch time. There was everything from the
Mad Hatter and Little Red Riding Hood to Greg Heffley from
Diary of a Wimpy Kid! Students were encouraged to quiz staff
about who they were and ask questions about which book
their character was from.
Bali gave an inspirational and interactive talk to some of
our Year 9 students about how important reading is to their
education and how it can enhance their everyday lives.

Accelerated Reader
The importance of reading cannot be overstated and here at Northampton Academy we use a programme with students called
Accelerated Reader (AR). It is ‘specifically designed to help children of all ages and abilities to learn to read and read to learn
– even when English is a second language’. AR motivates pupils of all abilities to read more and better books, raise literacy
standards and develop a lifelong love of reading. As little as 10 minutes reading every day can improve your child’s chances of
success in all subjects.
“Bali Rai is an expert in writing short, powerful
books...A great read that handles the difficult
subject matter perfectly.” - Reading Matters
During the day the whole school read one book during lessons,
The Hitchhiker by Anthony Horowitz. The story was divided into
six sections, one instalment for each lesson during the day.
Students take a short STAR reading test which identifies the
levels of books that they should be reading, known as their
ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development). If students choose
books within their ZPD and read these, it is expected that their
reading abilities will grow significantly. After completing a
book they take a short quiz on the computer. Students will be
rewarded for obtaining 100% on quizzes.
Incentives include lots of exciting prizes, from lollipops to
pizza parties! There is also an annual raffle for a chance to
win a laptop or one of three Amazon Kindle Fire tablets. Raffle
tickets are placed in the draw for every student who becomes a
‘word millionaire’, for everyone achieving their set targets each
half term, and for the most improved student in each group
following STAR testing.
Accelerated Reader gives every student the chance to succeed
and progress at their own level.
