Mental Health and Wellbeing
Here at Northampton Academy, we acknowledge that self-esteem is more vulnerable throughout a young person's life. We understand the need for sensitivity around individual needs and recognise that physical and emotional health may affect young people's ability to interact with others.
We provide opportunities for our young people to discuss their feelings and experiences in a safe environment. Then, together we agree on what needs to happen to make positive changes for our students, empowering them to feel more in control of their lives.
At Northampton Academy, we are deeply committed to the mental health and well-being of our students. We recognise that the school years can be challenging, and we want every student to feel supported in every aspect of their life—academically, emotionally, and socially. That’s why we have a dedicated Wellbeing Team at the school that offer mental health and well-being interventions tailored to meet the needs of each student. We also work very closely with external providers to enhance the provision that we offer.
We offer the following to support students:
Daily Drop-In Sessions
We offer daily drop-in sessions where students can come and talk to one of our trained well-being staff without an appointment. Whether it's about stress, friendships, schoolwork, or anything else, students are welcome to pop in for a chat. The drop-ins are safe, confidential spaces to discuss any concerns, no matter how big or small.
School Nurse Referrals
Our school nurse is available for more than just physical health issues—she's a great resource for discussing emotional and mental well-being too. Whether it's managing stress, dealing with anxiety, or just having someone to talk to, the school nurse offers a calm and professional presence. She can also help refer students to other services if needed.
Interventions and Targeted Support
For students who may need a little extra help, we provide targeted intervention programs tailored to individual needs. These programs are designed to support students in managing anxiety, building resilience, improving social skills, and developing healthy coping strategies. We work closely with families and teachers to ensure each student gets the right level of care and support.
In-School Counselling
For those who may need more in-depth support, we offer confidential counselling services with trained professionals. Our counsellors are here to help students work through difficult emotions, traumatic experiences, or any personal issues that might be affecting their well-being or academic performance. Counselling sessions are available by appointment, and students can refer themselves or be referred by a teacher, parent, or member of staff.
Peer Mentoring
We also believe in the power of peer support. Our trained peer mentors are available to provide guidance and a listening ear to their fellow students. Sometimes it’s easier to talk to someone of a similar age, and our peer support network fosters a sense of community and empathy among students.
Parent Support and Guidance
We understand that student well-being is closely connected to home life. That’s why we offer resources and support for parents and guardians, including worksExternal Partnerships and Referralshops, informational sessions, and regular communication to help parents support their children’s mental health.
When necessary, we work with local mental health organisations to provide additional support. We can facilitate referrals to external mental health professionals, such as MHST (Mental Health Support Team), or local services when a student may need specialised care beyond what the school can provide.
