Northampton Academy's Year 7 and 8 Rugby teams were given the opportunity to attend a special event at the Cinch Stadium - the home of Northampton Saints Rugby Club.
The event celebrated the achievements of local athletes Courtney Lawes, a Northampton Saints and England Rugby player, and Chantelle Cameron, a former Northampton Academy student and World Champion Boxer.
Both were awarded the Honorary Freeman and Freewoman of the Town by the Mayor of Northampton Councillor Stephen Hibbert. This accolade is the highest honour that a town council can bestow upon an individual, group, or organisation. This tradition dates back to the Medieval times, and the title of 'Freeman' used to allow special privileges. Nowadays, it is a symbolic honour, with a ceremonial scroll being presented and the names of Freemen and Freewomen listed at the town hall.
The event was attended by several Northampton schools, and students were thrilled to meet Chantelle and Courtney and participate in several boxing and rugby activities.
It was a memorable day for all involved.
