Ricky Munday CA who gave a talk to students about his ascent to the top of Mount Everest, and his voluntary work with the Red Cross and other organisations. An inspirational talk demonstrating how his perseverance, resilience and goal-setting overcame adversity.
He described his journey from a council estate near Glasgow to the top of the world on his recent successful ascent of Everest. During that journey, he had a number of terribly low points with associated mental health challenges. He has also pivoted several times in his career, and completing the Marathon des Sables after being made redundant totally changed his mindset.
After volunteering in an orphanage in Nairobi, he spent six years deployed with the Red Cross and other aid organisations in Sudan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Haiti. After stepping down from a senior role at the British Antarctic Survey to summit Everest, he qualified as a Mountain Leader and has now established a social enterprise. Key themes in his talk include perseverance, developing resilience, goal-setting and overcoming adversity.
