Year 11 student Kai is a keen musician looking to develop a career in music. Hearing from young people already treading this path is a great way to develop an awareness of the industry. Kai recently met up with Luke, who is currently studying for a Music Performance degree at the Institute of Contemporary Music in London.
Kai was able to ask questions about the importance of research, ahead of making future education and career decisions. Luke affirmed that thorough research is vital in ensuring that you are able to make well-informed decisions, and suggested Kai attend industry and university open events, both online and in person. He also highlighted the value of networking, creating new contacts who will help secure gigs and other music-related employment. The music industry is built on interpersonal engagement, and as such, Luke advised Kai to develop his time management and interpersonal skills. In Luke's experience, musicians and promoters will promote and support those who continually offer a professional service and are easy to work with.
Northampton Academy Careers Department would like to extend their thanks to Luke for giving his time and sharing his experiences with a fellow musician.
