Tutor Reading Discussion Cards

Categories: Latest Academy News

Our Tutor Reading Programme, since it’s launch in September 2018, has been incredibly successful and has contributed towards improving our students’ reading ages but also their exposure and enjoyment of a wider range of literature.

This year, we’ve introduced some discussion prompt cards to encourage students to think and share ideas of their Tutor Reading books in a more detailed and academic way. This has also been incredibly successful and I got the chance to visit Mrs Ridgard’s Year 7 tutor group last week to see this in action. It was an absolute delight to see all students fully engaged and passionately sharing what they thought about the book. What was also impressive was seeing how they used the phrases and sentence starters on the discussion prompt cards to help them structure their verbal responses with some really sophisticated and academic vocabulary.

It is hoping that this strategy will help students improve their oracy skills throughout the curriculum to give them a really strong foundation in all their subjects.
