The library is hosting another pop-up event in the canteen this week. The Vending Machine Coin Exchange will allow students to exchange their vending token for new books not featured in the vending machine before, including Young Adult books. Vending machine tokens are a prize for various reading or literacy achievements, including reading challenges or interventions. The event will be held on Thursday at lunchtime at the canteen, so please remind students to bring their vending machine tokens with them on the day.
The librarians have prepared a My Culture Day DEAR time booklet with three extracts from books featuring a variety of cultures. The books include a fantasy novel, The Song of Silver, Flame Like Night by Amélie Wen Zhao, rooted in the Chinese genres of xianxia and wuxia, Kwame Alexander's verse novel, The Door of No Return which is based on the real lives of the Asante people, who are native to a region of West Africa now known as Ghana and Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secret of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. This novel follows two Mexican-American teenagers.
Our Carnegie 'Shadowing' Group is well underway, and our students are starting to review their first book from the Carnegie Medal for Writing shortlist. On Tuesday, April 1, during the lunchtime book club session, we will offer tips and tricks on writing good reviews over some cake.
Finally, we're launching a new Earth Day Research Club after the holiday. The enrichment club will teach students how to use library books to research. Students can use our rich collection of information books to research ecology, energy and land use, environment protection and other related topics. The club's goal will be to design your own eco-city, urban area or home. Students can sign up this week, either at the library or their STEM courses.
