After a very competitive application process, three Year 12 students shone through to successfully bag management positions within the Northampton Academy Sports Journalism Team.
The new team will gradually take over the leadership during May and will be in full control by the time I leave school in the summer and make my step to university. The group will work together with Maryam, Olly, Nathan and George of the current Sports Journalism Team, to provide coverage of the school’s activity in sport across the community.
Abigail has some outstanding experience within the news industry. Being part of British Gymnastics, she is heavily involved in this iconic sport, while producing content for the club’s official website. Additionally, she is frequently allocated to look after groups of younger children at gymnastic competitions and ensuring they stay motivated. After Sixth Form she aspires to attend university, studying a course within the realm of English Literature, Journalism, and Publishing, with a goal to pursue a similar career. In addition, she insists her passion for sport will not diminish, as she would like to further her judging and coaching qualifications within gymnastics.
Passionate about English and ardent about sports, Sky has also got his hands dirty for the wider community. Through National Citizen Service, he helped his team raise £800 for the Hope Charity in Northampton, providing support to a homeless person for two whole years. He’s also arranged fundraising events, such as a 12-hour cycling test at Virgin Active in Riverside. Footballer by hobby, he plans to study Marketing and Film at a leading university after Year 13, using his degree to create a business plan within the film industry. Sky also enjoys writing about the stories that are bubbling away in today’s society, expressing his views and opinions, which highlights his journalism credentials.
Bethany is set to bring a new dimension to the Sports Journalism Team. Not only will she help manage the team, but she’ll specialise in the activity of the school’s Sports Ambassadors after being a sports leader herself and winning the Northampton Academy Sports Leader of the Year Award 2016 along the way. Enthusiastic organised and experienced within leading activities for young people, Bethany aims to give the Sports Ambassador’s the credit that they deserve. Additionally, through playing football, Bethany has taken leadership roles and given her fellow players feedback on how to improve. Obviously, Bethany wants a job within the sporting industry after university, perhaps specialising in psychology or coaching.
Matthew Bates
